Can You Use a Bed Rack With a Tonneau Cover on a 2016–2023 Tacoma?

The safe buying rule: do not buy a rack from the word “tonneau-compatible” alone. Confirm the exact cover and rack together in the manufacturer’s fitment documentation before ordering.

What decides compatibility

There are three common arrangements:

1. T-slot / rail-mounted system. The cover provides an integrated track and the rack is explicitly designed to use it. For example, Yakima’s OverHaul HD Tonneau Set is specified for selected T-slot covers, including Retrax XR-series covers, with the appropriate kit and crossbars. See Yakima’s compatibility list.
2. Bed-rail / under-cover bracket system. The rack attaches to the Tacoma bed rail or beneath the cover’s mounting edge, leaving the cover in place. This is still model-specific: bracket thickness, rail location, cover clamps, and available clearance matter. 3. Shared mounting space with no approved solution. If both products require the same bed-rail area, or the rack blocks the cover’s hardware or opening path, treat the combination as incompatible unless the manufacturer documents an adapter or a specific configuration.

The five checks to make before you buy

1. Identify both exact product models

“Tri-fold tonneau” and “mid-height rack” are not enough. Get the cover model/part number, the rack SKU and leg/bracket kit. Product families often have different rail systems and hardware between versions.

2. Match your Tacoma and bed length

Confirm the model year, cab/bed configuration and bed length on both manufacturers’ fitment pages. A rack’s hardware and crossbar length can differ between the short and long bed.

3. Compare the mounting interfaces

Ask where each product attaches:

• Does the cover occupy the bed rail?
• Does the rack need the factory deck rail, a T-slot, or an under-cover bracket?
• Does either manufacturer specify an adapter kit?
• Does the rack load go into the truck bed/rails rather than an unapproved cover surface?

An integrated track is not a universal standard. Treat it as a candidate interface, then verify the exact parts together.

4. Decide what “keep the cover” means

Physical coexistence is different from normal operation. Check whether the cover can still roll, retract, fold or be removed after the rack is installed. For its own crossbar system, KB Voodoo says folding covers cannot open with the rack installed, retractable covers still function, and roll-up covers stop at the rack’s rear legs. 5. Verify the complete loaded setup

If you will carry a rooftop tent, bikes, recovery gear, or other heavy cargo, verify the rack’s instructions and dynamic/static ratings for the exact setup. Do not combine ratings from separate products or assume that a physically compatible pairing is approved for your intended load.

Start with the mounting interface, then verify the exact rack-and-cover pairing, the cover’s usable movement, and the intended load.
