Choose coverage by what needs protection
An engine skid protects the front underside; transmission, transfer-case and fuel-tank plates protect different components farther back. A front plate alone is not the same decision as a complete underbody system. Buy the coverage that matches the obstacles and exposure your truck will actually see.

Steel versus aluminum
Neither material is universally “best.” It is a trade between mass, intended impact severity and maintenance.
- Aluminum: lower weight is valuable when you are adding several plates, cargo, a bumper or other accessories. Choose it when your use calls for protection but keeping total vehicle mass down matters.
- Steel: generally the stronger choice for repeated, harder impacts and sliding over obstacles, with a weight penalty and corrosion maintenance to consider.
As one real product-family comparison, RCI describes 3/16-inch steel and typically 1/4-inch-or-thicker aluminum options; its full package lists materially different total weights. Fitment checks that matter
Verify your model year, drivetrain, factory cross-members, exhaust routing, existing bumper and any lift or suspension changes. Some products use factory mounting points; others introduce trim- or configuration-specific requirements. A fuel-tank plate can have different requirements by trim, so do not assume a package shown on one Tacoma fits every truck.
Also preserve service access. A well-designed system may include oil-drain or filter access, but confirm it in the instructions for the actual part number before buying.
Bottom line
For occasional mild trails, begin with the exposed areas you have identified rather than maximum coverage. For frequent rock contact, expand coverage and accept the mass/maintenance trade of steel where appropriate. The right answer is a coverage map plus an exact vehicle fitment check—not a material slogan.
